Permanent Resident Definition

Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs), are non-citizens of the United States who are lawfully living in the U.S. permanently under legally recognized and lawfully recorded permanent residence as an immigrant. Lawful Permanent Residents are also known as “permanent resident alien,” “resident alien permit holder,” and “Green Card holder.” Permanent Residents may accept employment offers without special restrictions, own property, receive financial assistance at public colleges and universities, and join the Armed Forces. They may also apply to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain eligibility requirements.
